Careers in Residential Aged Care
“Now is a great time to join public healthcare and work within the aged care setting. Australia’s population is ageing rapidly and our current aged care system needs to change to keep up with future demand. The aged care reforms enable generational change and put senior Australians and their individual needs first. Barwon Health values high-quality healthcare and we are committed to providing the best possible outcomes for our residents.
Nurses are integral to the delivery of high-quality health care and we value your skills and empathy. If you are passionate about helping people, working in aged care is your chance to make a genuine difference in people’s lives.
The rewards and job satisfaction you receive from helping one of Australia’s most vulnerable populations makes aged care a perfect career.”

Max, Resident, Wallace Lodge
Max has called the McKellar Centre's Wallace Lodge home for the past four years. Max enjoys the lifestyle at Wallace Lodge and looks forward to regular visits from his four children and 13 grandchildren.
Max is a retired officer in charge in the country fire brigade and worked throughout regional Victoria over his 47 year career. Following his fire-fighting career, Max drove school buses from Werribee to the old Chanel College, which he also enjoyed.
Max enjoys talking and socialising with fellow Wallace Lodge residents and staff and has formed many close friendships. He is an avid Melbourne Football Club supporter and loves to go to a game when they play in Geelong.
“We are a big family at Wallace Lodge,” Max says. "The staff tend to any needs I have and I receive excellent care."
Ana Hourihan – Wallace Lodge Garden Nurse Unit Manager
“When the opportunity presented itself for a position in Wallace Lodge Garden 12 months ago, I was certain that Barwon Health would be able to offer me what I was looking for – career progression and work-life balance.
Being part of the public sector I knew there would be lots of support provided to both employees and residents/patients and jumped at the chance. Since being employed 12 months ago as the Acting Nurse Unit Manager in Wallace Lodge Garden, I was formally appointed to the role earlier in the year, seconded to the Safety and Quality Coordinator for Aged Care for five months and have now returned to Wallace Lodge as the Acting Facility Manager – quite the whirlwind however, I believe my journey emphasises the endless opportunities Barwon Health offers.
Working as nurse in Aged Care gives me a lot of satisfaction knowing that I have made a difference in my resident’s lives. Barwon Health has a supportive and caring culture that allows you to be able to look after residents in the best way possible. There is a real sense of teamwork amongst the staff and a common objective which is to make a real difference in the resident’s lives.”
