Q&A with a Medical Officer

Meet Terrance, a Medical Officer working within University Hospital Geelong.
Did you always want to be a medical officer?
I didn’t always want to be a medical officer, I actually began my professional career as a high school maths and science teacher. Medicine was a very late choice for me and I’ve never looked back. It is a fantastic and rewarding career that truly embodies lifelong learning and continuous improvement; exactly what I signed up for.
What do you see as rewarding elements to your work at Barwon Health?
The patient contact is easily the best part of the job. Interacting with patients and providing them with some care and comfort during what is mostly a very scary and unpleasant time of their life allows you to really hold your head high about what you do for a living.
What opportunities for career growth have you been provided with working at Barwon Health?
Being a teaching hospital and institution, there is a great focus on training the next generation of medical officers. I really enjoy the dedicated teaching sessions and the Grand Rounds that are on offer through Barwon Health, but mostly I love the teaching culture and the interactions you get with registrars and consultants who are always more than happy to teach and grow your skill set in a supportive environment.
